The Challenge

The programme needed two things to work as one: a training campus with calls, courses and materials in several languages, and a community where participants could meet, talk and gather live. Participants also had to complete certain forms before accessing content, and the consortium team needed to export that information to track the project.

Our Solution

We built the campus on Moodle with the RemUI theme, a custom home page and call-for-proposals pages, and each edition's results published in a gallery. We integrated Linguise to translate the site and, on top of Edwiser Forms, developed our own plugins and scripts: mandatory onboarding forms, access validation, importable activity calendars and data export for the team. The community runs on Discourse, with a custom theme and three extensions we built: video meetings (BigBlueButton) created from the forum, a community directory and integration with campus profiles. In 2026 we upgraded the whole community to Discourse's extended-support release: we adapted the plugins, ran QA and backups beforehand, and left a reproducible deployment in place.

Results & Impact

  • An active community of more than 770 people from 46 countries.
  • Campus and forum integrated: people who enrol in the training also appear in the community directory.
  • Onboarding forms completed before accessing content, with exportable data to track the programme.
  • A major community upgrade with no loss of data or features, with ongoing support since 2024.
